I guess you know that on the conference program at Brown U., I had Shaw saying “Those who can, teach,” which I didn’t think violated what he really believed, since he always emphasized the didactic in his own works. Shaw was a great teacher himself, but his experience of actual teachers in Dublin soured him on the profession, and his experience of Oxford and Cambridge types when he got to England did not change that view. The thing that we have to realize is that teaching in many of today’s schools bears little resemblance to the teaching in schools of Shaw’s day, and he would actually approve of the much more practical and activity oriented learning of today.
